🌀Au Contraire: It's OK being the idiot
If you know, you know...
Its Ok being the idiot
Do you ever feel like you’re an idiot because you don’t understand something? Yeah me too.
I was in a meeting with my leadership team and a couple of attorneys were talking about acquisition terms. They were mammering on about the terms of the agreement, and I had no idea what they were talking about. You know how lawyers speak. We call it legalese, and they call it expertise. But I am the chief of my 50 head herd, the head honcho. The guy wearin’ the big hat. I am supposed to be the smart guy. The one that has been a student of business for 20 years. And being the supposed smart guy, I hate lookin’ incompetent.
But I didn’t want to look dumb. So I kept listening and hoping to get a hint of just what the hell they were talking about. I had no idea. I looked at my leadership team as they were nodding their head in agreement. Fuck. Why am I the only one that doesn’t understand this? Maybe I AM dumb.
So finally I told the monkey suits, no comprendo. Please explain this in blue collar English. When I do read the Bible, I don’t read the King James Version. And they obliged and kept mammering. But I still did not completely understand. So I kept asking questions. And they went on ‘till I finally understood completely.
After the meeting I confessed to my leadership team that I had no idea what the hell they were talking about until they further explained the terms to me. To my surprise, my leadership team had no idea either. They were just nodding their heads so THEY wouldn’t look dumb.
But the difference was… I was willing to look like an idiot. And sometimes that is what it takes to learn. You have to be willing to be the idiot.

P.S. And I have found out it is best to ask lawyers A LOT of questions because chances are… half the time they don’t understand that shit very well either.
