🌀 i bought a lotto ticket
Do rich people buy lotto tickets?
My lotto tickets. I didn’t win.
I don’t think most rich people buy lotto tickets because it’s kinda dumb.
So here I was in at the cash register in a gas station… being “that guy” that holds up the line selecting out the most appealing lottery tickets. I could feel the people behind me getting antsy cradling their 12 pack of beer, and I was the only thing between them and their upcoming buzz.
As an amateur lotto ticket buyer, I further agitated the folks behind me by trying to pay with a credit card. Debit or cash is the required payment method. Luckily, I had some cash.
I know most people buy their scratch offs and can barely wait to get out of the store to see if they are a winner.
But not me.
I didn’t buy the lotto tickets to win.
Say what weirdo?
Yeah, I bought them to study.
The reason I wanted to study them is to make my own scratch off tickets to send out in a direct mail campaign, (you can see the direct mail piece that made me a million bucks here.)
I don’t know if they will work or not. They go out next week and I gotta test, track and find out…
But it got me thinking.
You don’t want to buy a lottery ticket to win.
You want to make your own lottery ticket.
The odds are much better making your own lottery ticket.
If you like buying lottery tickets, you gotta try marketing. The odds of winning are better, and when you find a lucky winner… you can get fifthly rich.
And when you buy a lottery ticket, you don’t just buy one and expect to walk away a millionaire. You have to buy a bunch of lottery tickets to increase your odds(shitty as they may be), and most people are pretty consistent with it.
Well the same behavior is required with marketing. You have to test a bunch of shit to find your winner. And you have to be consistent. If you are not consistent you are not going to make discoveries.
I learned a lesson on consistency last year. I ran our FaceBook ads all year long… usually I turn them off after sales season. All of the sudden our Facebook leads spiked in the fall. I stumbled across a secondary sales season. I wouldn’t have gotten lucky if I hadn’t been consistent.
And these little discoveries compound over time… because guess what I am going to do this year? I am gonna do it again. And now since we grew last year I have even more money to spend. And the cycle continues. The rich keep getting richer not because they are evil… but because their efforts compound year after year.
Don’t hate the rich. Don’t even hate the game. Figure out the game and get in it!
Luck has a lot to do with success. But you gotta put yourself in a position to get lucky.
Try a bunch of shit.
Be consistent.
And for God’s sake don’t buy a lotto ticket. Make your own.
