🌀Au Contraire: Working out will not make you successful.
Eat your heart out gurus...
The rules for success:
You must work out.
You must eat healthy.
You must be alcohol free.
You must have a morning routine.
You must be educated.
In reality, these are all bullshit and have nothing to do with success. These are the smoke screen for the real work.
We covered the first two rules for success last week here.
Now the next rule.
3. Play your hand like a poker player.
This is separating emotion from your decisions.
In business, it goes something like this…
I had a sales person quit this week. He turned his shit in and walked out the door Wednesday. He didn’t give us notice. Just gone… in the middle of the sales season. Leaving us hanging in a bad way.
The kid started as a technician and we had recently promoted him to a salesperson… he started out making $15 an hour and now he was making $3,000 a week. Not bad for a 25 year old…
The morning he quit I was flooded with several emotions that took all day to process. I felt anger, then I felt hurt, and then after several hours I began reflecting on what I could have done better.
It was then I realized that “playing chess, not checkers”… has just as much to do with impulse control as intelligence. It is about letting the emotions flow through you, but not acting on them.
Even if I didn’t do anything to cause him to leave. I can use this experience to make our sales team better. I can control that.
You can’t control the emotions you feel, but you can control how you react to them. And it is one of the hardest things to do.
Take the time to process the emotions. Then. Turn the anger, hurt and frustration into awareness, resolve and focus.
There will be times when your ego wants to scream “fuck you.”
Every time I have let my pride do this… it has limited my opportunities in the future. Every time.
Next time you are tempted to react this way, I want you to think of this image.
#1 poker player Phil Ivey plays to win.
Let your pride take a hit, put on your poker face, and play to win the long game.
