🌀Au Contraire: Why do you want to be poor?

Because poor people want to be poor

So my question to you is… why do you want to be poor? And what the fuck are you going to do about it? I expect some goddamn emails folks!!

Poor people are a curious bunch. You would think being poor would suck enough to do something about it, but I think it might be a disease worse than herpes. Might even be fucking contagious.

You see I have my own focus group of people that want to be poor… some 50 odd people that work for me. And I study them and I constantly wonder why they like being poor. To be fair about 4 out of the 50 dont want to be despotly poor. But the rest are an interesting case story to which I have gained considerable insight into poor people.

This week I was coaching a rookie salesperson. His numbers are down, so I listened to some of his recorded calls. They kinda sucked. His energy was low. He had a monotone voice… very boring. I wanted to blow my fucking brains out boring. When I asked him about his tone and energy level, he told me he was being his “authentic self” on the phone, which means “I suck and I am ok with it.” If your authentic self sucks, you need to change. He was very resistant and defensive on my suggestions to improve his close rate(and increase his commissions).

Poor people don’t want to acquire knowledge.

In another scenario, I was fascinated by this young twenty year old employee reading books to improve his mindset. He could hold an intelligent conversation which was a relief in a sea of dumbness. But the more I started to watch the kid, the more I realized he wasn’t actually learning from those books. He always clocks out right at the “suggested time.” He never puts any extra effort into anything unless I ask him to. He is intaking the knowledge, but not applying it.

Poor people may have knowledge, but they don’t apply it. So the knowledge is useless.

One of my managers got a windfall inheritance when his uncle died. The lucky son of a bitch got $200,000 for being a good nephew. But he told me he found a CD that he is going to put his money in for a 5% return. And it struck me how risk averse he was. 5% might not even keep up with inflation… true inflation anyways. It made me realize why he works for me and not starting his own thing. It’s safer to work for me.

Poor people don’t take risks. They like to be safe and they like certainty.

Another one of my managers has a more difficult time delegating things. He prides himself in being an invaluable and priceless part of the operation. He brags about how much he is doing and how the place would fall apart without him. It makes him feel special. But this is really dumb. He hasn’t realized that replacing himself is not lazy. It creates leverage. Leverage to do much more valuable things with his time(and become more valuable and make more money).

Poor people want to do the dumb easy work.

Another manager doesn’t come very prepared to our meetings. He doesn’t study the past weeks data and try to understand how the operation is performing. He is very good at putting out fires and handling the daily problems, but he doesn’t think two steps ahead to prevent the daily fires in the first place. He likes jumping from one problem to the next and feeling like a superhero for constantly being the guy that can fix it. And then it hit me.

Poor people hate thinking. They put very little thought into what they do. They would rather play checkers than chess.

But then I realized being poor is relative. We are all poor compared to someone else. A guy worth $10 million might as well be making $20 an hour compared to a guy worth $100 million. Why do I want to be poor and what can I do to change it?

A lot of people hate the rich, but it’s kinda backasswards. We should hate the poor people mentality. But what do rich people do differently? What is the difference? What is in their head?

Here is the rich people playbook.

Rich people absorb a shitload of knowledge. They buy courses. They read books. They watch videos. They pay mentors. They are constantly absorbing new things, new ideas, and new tactics. They are very curious people. They ask ALOT of questions. They want to know EVERYTHING.

Then rich people turn this knowledge into action. They apply this knowledge. Applying knowledge is what turns it from useless to useful. Learning is not absorbing knowledge. Learning is applying knowledge to get a different result. Learning is change. It provides feedback to know which direction to go.

Then rich people take risks. They understand what goes up must go down first. When you start a business, your bank account goes down before it goes up. They understand that money is a tool. They put it to work. They try things. They make mistakes, and they keep making mistakes until they get it right. A lot of times rich people may look like fuck-ups at the beginning, but they understand the ones that fail the most, win the most.

Rich people hate doing the same thing over and over. They delegate tasks as fast as possible, and move on to the next thing to delegate. The best ones look lazy, because everybody else is doing everything for them which allows them time to…

Think. Rich people do a lot of thinking. Not daydreaming while you are driving… not that kind of thinking. The type of thinking that plans your next 2-3 steps. They deliberately sit down and put their brain to work. This is hard and most people avoid it including myself. But once you realize how much rich people really sit down and think and think hard… you realize why you are so poor.

So again, my question to you is… why do you want to be poor? And what the fuck are you going to do about it? I expect some goddamn emails folks!!
